For How Long Will Ladies 'Build Homes' Alone?

How much should a woman take in the name of ‘holding a home together’? This piece was motivated by a call I got from informing me that a friend again admitted after domestic violence. Our efforts to get her to walk away have been futile.

I once attended a seminar where the chief speaker was a domestic violence survivor and her message was ‘You can’t build a home alone, unless you are single’.  She had walked out of her matrimonial home after 34 years of heartache, tears and sadness.

The situation is made worse by the society with the message ‘it’s up to the woman to hold her home together’ and believers of this hold on despite the beatings; hoping that one day it will be over.

Know your value

I believe a relationship should be based on among other things, understanding. If your partner is not mature enough to pass his complaints without violence, he is not mature enough to have you. Many will like you to believe you are the problem but truth is, you are not. So quit staying, promising to be better, believing then he will stop hitting you.

Men who are violent towards women have issues that being good to them can’t solve. They may be suffering from self esteem issues and have to hit a woman to feel manly. What they don’t know is beating a woman does not make them ‘real’ men. And you ladies don’t hold onto an imaginary home and suffer in the name of ‘home building’. Summon your inner strength and walk away, before the inner scars are too deep. Walking away will not make you weak, rather strong. Remember, A slap will lead to more slaps, broken bones, halted dreams and God forbid, death.
